Understand what macOS calls System Data.

System Data is not one folder you can safely empty. It is a changing accounting category that can include caches, logs, snapshots, application support files, virtual memory, and protected operating-system data.

Short answerMac System Data is a broad storage category, not a single removable directory. Its total can include temporary, purgeable, shared, protected, and application-managed data, so a folder scan may not equal the number shown by macOS.

What System Data can contain

  • Application support data used outside an app bundle.
  • Caches and logs created by macOS and installed applications.
  • Virtual memory such as swap backing files.
  • Time Machine local snapshots retained by APFS.
  • Developer artifacts from Xcode, simulators and package managers.
  • Update and installation data that the operating system manages.
  • Protected or uncategorized data that cannot be assigned to a visible user category.

Why storage numbers do not always add up

A filesystem tree, an APFS volume, and the Storage panel answer different questions. A tree adds readable file sizes. The volume knows about free and used physical blocks. macOS additionally estimates purgeable space and groups files into user-facing categories.

What Full Disk Access can—and cannot—do

When granted to Klyr Pro, Full Disk Access can make more privacy-protected locations readable. It remains a user-controlled macOS permission. It cannot bypass System Integrity Protection, the sealed read-only system volume, filesystem permissions, encryption, missing cloud content, or data belonging to another user.

There is no general macOS API that guarantees “all files are accessible.” Klyr records failures from the requested scan and labels the result partial or access-limited when necessary.

What to review before moving anything

Start with data whose purpose you understand: your own large downloads, exact duplicates, old installers, or rebuildable developer artifacts. Treat system-owned paths, unknown application support files, backups, and active project data cautiously. Maintain a current backup and do not remove an item solely because its category is large.

Important: macOS can reclaim some caches and purgeable storage on its own. A large System Data number is not, by itself, proof that files should be removed.

Why does System Data change size?

Caches, logs, swap, local snapshots, developer artifacts and software updates change over time. macOS can also update its category estimate after background indexing.

Can any app read all System Data?

No. Full Disk Access broadens privacy access but does not override every macOS protection or make cloud-only data local.

Why is a Klyr scan marked partial?

The scan encountered a denied or excluded location, or it was cancelled. Klyr does not present the readable subtotal as a complete measurement.
