A five-step MacBook cleanup
- Check available capacity in macOS Storage and note the largest categories.
- Review Downloads, installers, old exports, and media you no longer use.
- Scan readable folders to find unusually large branches and exact duplicate files.
- Review app leftovers or Xcode data only when you know the associated app or project is no longer needed.
- Move selected items to Trash, check your important workflows, then empty Trash and rescan.
Avoid these risky shortcuts
Do not remove protected system files, unknown Library folders, active project archives, or backups simply because they are large. Do not assume a tool can identify all “junk” on every Mac. macOS System Data is a category rather than a single removable directory. Understand its limits.
