Where large files usually hide on a Mac
Downloads, exported videos, disk images, installers, virtual machines, archives, old device backups, and developer data can consume tens of gigabytes. Application support folders may also be large, but their purpose is less obvious and they deserve more care.
How to find large files with Klyr Disk
- Choose a folder or readable volume to scan.
- Open Large Files or explore the storage map.
- Sort by size and begin with paths you recognize.
- Check whether the file belongs to an active project, backup, library, or application.
- Select only items you understand, then move them to macOS Trash.
- Confirm your apps and projects still work before emptying Trash.
Large does not mean unnecessary
A virtual machine, photo library, application bundle, or release archive may be large because it is valuable. Size helps prioritize a review; it does not establish that a file is junk. Klyr shows the path, size, and context while leaving the decision with you.
Why the recovered space can differ
Klyr Disk measures readable files, while APFS manages snapshots, clones, shared blocks, and purgeable capacity at the volume level. Removing a 10 GB logical file does not always create exactly 10 GB of new free space. Rescan after cleanup to measure the result.
Privacy: storage scanning runs on your Mac. Klyr does not upload or store your file names, file contents, or scan results for storage analysis.

Can Finder show large files?
Finder can search by file size, but a storage analyzer adds folder totals and a visual hierarchy that make large branches easier to understand.
Does Klyr scan every file?
It scans readable locations in the scope you choose. macOS permissions, protected paths, cloud-only files, and changing data can limit coverage, which Klyr reports.
What should I check first?
Start with your own downloads, videos, disk images, installers, and completed project exports because their purpose is usually easier to verify.
